Kenny Roberts, the pioneer of american roadracing. He won the AMA grand national championship and the Daytona 200 as well as numerous road and dirt races. When he went to Europe the Europeans scoffed at him because americans hadn't yet made their mark in gps (boy would that change! with americans winning the '78,'79,'80,'83,'84,'85,'86,'88,'89,'90,'91,'92,'93 500cc world championships) Roberts won the '78,'79,'80 championships.He lost the '83 championship to Freddie Spencer by 2 points.
When Kenny needed rain tires the Euros refused to give him any, so he made his own, starting a whole new style of tires "the cut slicks". Back then the races were done on public road circuits. With many riders dying, Roberts started a riders union and made the tracks safer. With many riders going broke, Roberts lobbied and got more money for the racers.Kenny Roberts was one of the fitness pioneers for riders. Roberts was also one of the first to perfect Jarno Saarenen's hang off style which is broadly used today. Kenny Roberts then turned to be a team owner. His employees included:Randy Mamola,Eddie Lawson,Wayne Rainey, John Kocinski, Abe,and Luca Cadalora.Roberts then decided to go it alone and started up the "KR" project, first with marlboro backing, then with Proton.
